Hospital Medicine

Hospitalists bridge the gap and allow patients and their parents to receive and benefit from:

• Familiarity and consistency. A hospitalist assumes the role of a child’s primary pediatrician during his or her stay at CHAM, overseeing and managing the child's care to improve parents’ comfort level and patients’ medical outcomes.

• Personalized, collaborative and comprehensive care. Family-focused care and attention to detail are essential in what is often a very stressful time. Hospitalists visit patients daily, coordinate all major aspects of a child’s treatment, keep parents informed of their child’s condition and plan of care, and more.

• Structured and regular communication with primary care physicians, referring physicians and specialists. Your child’s referring physician is kept in the loop when your child is admitted to the hospital and discharged home, so that his/her doctor can resume complete responsibility for your child's care. Hospitalists work to ensure a smooth transition from inpatient to outpatient care.

Our Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine is home to the largest group of pediatric hospitalists in the New York tri-state area. Together with ten physician assistants, our hospitalists provide culturally competent, family-centered medical care to more than 4,000  children each year. The Division also plays a major role in education for medical students and pediatric residents. Our physicians have received six educational grants and five educational awards for excellence in medical education. 
 
The Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship program is designed to produce excellent clinicians in the care of hospitalized children with both acute and complex chronic illnesses, as well as outstanding leaders in the field. At the regional level, the Division leads the NYC Regional Pediatric Hospital Medicine Forum, a collaborative network of 170 hospitalists from more than 30 regional hospitals. The Division organizes annual regional conferences to improve the training of hospitalists, as well as the care of hospitalized children in the region.
