Quality & Performance Improvement Course

The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is offering a 12 month course on the principles of quality improvement (QI) theory and its application to children’s health care systems and child health.

The course is open to faculty and staff in healthcare systems who are interested in learning quality improvement methods to improve healthcare and outcomes  for children and their families.  Physicians, nurses, administrators, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, social workers, are all welcome to apply.

Course Description

The first part of the course introduces theory and tools from widely-used Quality Improvement methods, including the Model for Improvement and Lean Six Sigma. The second part is focused on teaching participants how to lead QI initiatives at their organizations and provides the necessary tools required for success. The course, now in its 5th year, is taught by experienced and dedicated QI faculty, who have been practicing QI for over 10 years.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will:  

  1. Conduct a successful QI improvement project, including demonstrating an understanding of how to apply the Model for Improvement and other QI tools and methods successfully; and
  2. Improve health outcomes for children and their families.

Topics covered during the course include: the Model for Improvement, PDSA cycles, Lean methodology, 5S, leadership, Key Driver Diagrams, Ishikawa Diagrams, team building, sustainability, Control charts and variation, Health Equity, Process Mapping, 5-Whys, Pareto Charts, Just Culture, and more.

Previous Projects and Results 

Project topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Improving access to clinic appointments
  • Timely discharge from the hospital
  • Reducing hospital readmissions
  • Improving management of high-risk patient populations
  • Reducing hospital acquired infections and conditions
  • Improving transfer of patient health information
  • Improving efficiency and timeliness of clinical services
  • Adherence to new clinical practice guidelines

What you get

  • CME/CEU credits for attending didactic sessions and completing IHI modules (contact course leader for details)
  • American Board of Pediatrics Part 2 Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credits for completing IHI modules 
  • Quality improvement projects can qualify for 25 Part 4 MOC credits to both the participant and any other faculty who participate 
  • Meet biweekly one-on-one with an experienced quality improvement coach, via phone or in-person at CHAM depending on preference of applicant 
  • Distinguishing CV builder, as QI expertise is sought-out  and distinguishes healthcare professionals
  • Opportunity to build a strong network of like-minded healthcare professionals seeking to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes for children

What is required

  • Attend fifteen 120 minute course meetings, Tuesdays at 3PM, beginning January 2018 through December 2018

    • Course meets twice a month from January-March to help get projects up and running and then monthly from April-November
  • Complete the 13 session online Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Quality Improvement certificate 
    • Online
  • Regularly present project outcomes/updates to your home department/institution as well as your peers in the course.
  • Final projects should be able to produce a publishable manuscript.

Quality Improvement Spotlight

Michael Rinke, MD, PhD Medical Director for Pediatric Quality and a nationally known QI researcher, leads CHAM’s Performance Improvement (PI) group.  Dr. Rinke has published widely in the field of pediatric quality and safety. Dr. Rinke’s research interests—ranging from reducing medication errors, to patient safety executive walk-rounds, to preventing central line-associated blood stream infections in ambulatory patients—involve any project aimed at reducing preventable harm to children within the medical system. Dr. Rinke currently leads two Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality R01 grants on pediatric diagnostic errors and pediatric ambulatory healthcare associated infections.
